ASSIGNMENTS -
DUE WEDNESDAY, May 7

- Complete the CISTAR Onboarding Survey.
DUE Tuesday, MAY 27
- Complete the CISTAR REU Pre-program survey. Kristin Everett, Everett Evaluations, will email this to you.
DUE FRIDAY, MAY 30 (THESE WILL REQUIRE YOUR PURDUE EMAIL ADDRESS)
- Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) This online training will take 2+ hours. You can find the assignment in the learning management system, Brightspace, under Weekly Assignments. SURF will email you the link to Brightspace approximately one week before the program begins.
- Safety training. These instructions vary depending on whether you are doing experimental work, so they will be emailed to you directly.
PURDUE EMAIL
- You will need to use your Purdue email address to access several of the systems we will be using this summer.
- Call Purdue ITAP at 765-494-4000 (https://itap.purdue.edu), which is open 24 hours.
- Choose option #1 to get to a staff person.
- Tell them that you are a visiting student in the SURF program on the West Lafayette campus and would like to set up your email address and password before you arrive on campus.
- You will need to provide the following (PUID and alias are in the Welcome email, sent to you on April 30):
- PUID
- Purdue username (alias), also called career account
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Address
- Valid ID to show in a Zoom call
- Download the DUO and Microsoft Authentication apps to your phone because you will use these regularly.
COMMUNICATION
- During the program, we will mainly use SLACK to provide you with updates; you will receive an invitation to join the group.
- The REU Google Calendar provides information and links for various meetings and events.
DRESS CODE
- If you are working in a lab, you will need closed-toe shoes.
- Dress on most days is casual.
- You will need one business casual outfit when you present your work at the SURF Symposium (collared shirt or equivalent, dress pants or skirt).
TRAVEL TO PURDUE
- You will be living in First Street Towers Residence Hall.
- Location on Google Maps, the main entrance is on First Street.
- If you are driving
- When you arrive, use the pull-in outside the main entrance to First Street to unload your things.
- You will be given a residence hall parking permit. Parking is permitted in areas designated for residence hall permits (these have white signs). Do not park in spaces marked A/B/C or other specialty spaces.
- If you are coming on the airport shuttle, Lafayette Limo, you will be dropped off at Purdue West, where we will meet you to take you to the residence hall, which is very close by.
MOVING IN
- Check-in is Sunday, June 1, 1:00 - 5:00 PM Eastern.
- We will meet in the first-floor lounge of the main building for pizza at 6:00 PM.
- These are single rooms with private bathrooms
- Bed linens, blanket, pillow with pillow case, towel, and washcloth are provided. Sheets and towels are exchanged once a week.
- Washers and dryers are provided on the floors at no charge. They are located behind the dinette area.
- Each floor has two large-screen TVs located in the shared living room.
- AT&T wi-fi is a free service that is available for use with any wireless-capable device.
- You will have a meal plan that includes dinner each weeknight at the nearby dining hall. Other meals are on your own. There will be a small refrigerator in your room.
DAY 1 on campus, MONDAY, June 2
- Meet Jorge at the main entrance to First Street Towers at 8:00 a.m. to walk to the SURF orientation in WALC. Orientation activities will include lunch.
- Welcome reception, 4:00-5:00 PM in FRNY (the Chemical Engineering building), to meet the CISTAR team, your faculty mentor, and your graduate mentor.
- Dinner will be at the dining hall. Meet Jorge outside the main building of First Street @ 6 PM to walk over.

- Purdue Recreational Wellness Center (Co-Rec), a monthly membership is $40
- Restaurants and Things to Do in Greater Lafayette
- Citybus to local grocery stores, etc. Kroger, Walmart, Meijer.
- Purchasing through Amazon while on campus
EMERGENCY PREPARATION
Sign up for emergency text messages at http://www.purdu .edu/securepurdue/. Click
on the "Change Your Password" icon, and log in. Then click on emergency contact
information in the right column under the account tools list. Finally, enter your cell phone
number. (Please get in touch with your service provider to ensure that your phone can receive
such messages.) To be removed from the text system, follow the above procedures and
delete your cell phone number.
