Diversity & Culture of Inclusion Overview
To be successful, everyone needs to encourage diversity and a culture of inclusion.
CISTAR is dedicated to creating a diverse, inclusive center where members from all backgrounds are ready to participate and lead in a global energy economy. At CISTAR, everyone in the center is responsible for helping with our diversity and inclusion goals:
- To broaden the participation of groups underrepresented in STEM fields in CISTAR and, ultimately, in energy fields;
- To create an inclusive center that supports, values, respects, and rewards all its members to their fullest potential; and,
- To prepare culturally intelligent, global engineers.
CISTAR members also follow up by helping us with recruitment and by being outstanding mentors to undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds. In fact, our summer programs are largely successful because of the quality of our mentors and the care and attention they pay to help prepare the next generation of engineers. Dr. Tobin Marks Reflects on CISTAR Pending Renewal and the Role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion By Dr. Denise Driscoll
Dr. Linda Broadbelt introduced her colleague, Dr. Tobin Marks, who was scheduled to make some after-dinner remarks. She enumerated the many ways that Dr. Marks has been remarkable over the years, whether one looks “by the numbers” (i.e., the number of awards, publications, students mentored, and patents) or at his collegiality as he is the first to answer email requests, the first to offer his help or leadership, and the first to encourage first-generation college students, being one himself. During his address, Dr. Marks pointed out to the graduate students the uniqueness of their opportunity in CISTAR to interact with industry and learn more practical applications and also addressed how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is more than just capturing the numbers.
