Jeffrey Miller Receives Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award
Dr. Jeffrey Miller, a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, has been awarded the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award by the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering. The award recognizes Miller's exceptional mentorship of graduate students as both researchers and instructors. This marks the second recognition of Miller's mentoring efforts, following his receipt of the 2020 CISTAR Faculty Mentor Award.
Miller has mentored a total of 54 students ranging from high school to PhD level since joining Purdue in 2015. Many of his students have gone on to receive numerous awards and secure positions in national labs and leading multinational companies. Miller has emphasized the importance of developing soft skills in addition to technical expertise, noting that successful careers require excellence in teamwork, leadership, initiative, self-confidence, communication, and the ability to work with others at different skill and knowledge levels.
One of Miller's former students, Aubrey Quigley, recently received Honorable Mention for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Quigley was a CISTAR Fellow from January 2018 until her graduation from Purdue University in May 2021. Quigley noted that Miller was an approachable mentor who encouraged her to share her research and played a pivotal role in her decision to pursue graduate school.
Miller expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with such exceptional students, stating, "It is my great honor and privilege to work with such outstanding students and provide them with the opportunity to achieve their full potential."
The Outstanding Faculty Mentor award is given based on nominations from graduate students within the school of Chemical Engineering, with one professor selected to receive the award. Miller was chosen as the 2023 Outstanding Faculty Mentor by Chemical Engineering graduate students. He will receive a plaque and a personal tribute composed by his students.
